Favre Traded!!!! [Shrug]
BEAKING NEWS!!! Former local hero and retiree Brett Favre was traded to the New York Jets today for anything that the Packers could get for him; in this case being a fourth-round pick in next year’s draft.
Favre, 39, completely disgraced himself this past offseason with a teary-eyed retirement speech (his fourth consecutive season in which he announced plans to retire), followed by an announcement that he intended on returning to the Packers for the upcoming season, despite being told by the team that they had moved on and didn’t want him back and a fan base that has seemingly lost interest in him.
Brett Favre has obviously had an excellent career. However, Favre is kind of the Pete Rose of football, not in terms of the gambling or the scumbag-ness, but in that similarly to Rose’s paltry career OPS of .784, Favre’s counting stats are have come at the expense of his rate of success. He is the NFL’s all-time leader in completions and touchdown passes, but he is only 15th in pass-completion percentage and 51st in touchdown-pass-completion percentage. He is also third all-time in fumbles and has done all this while starting more games than any other player in NFL history.
Most significantly, however, is Favre’s inability to die with dignity. Favre was still an above-average quarterback last season, and unlike Ken Griffey Jr. or NBC’s The Office, burnt out before he could fade away. As training camp rolled around, however, lo and behold, Favre wanted back in. Why is there no respect for going out on top? Does no one understand how inherently cool that is? Roger Clemens and Brett Favre can’t possibly think that it is cool or honorable to launch never-ending farewell tours, a la KISS and Cher. It’s completely ungraceful, and Favre’s return and subsequent trade to the Jets can really only serve to tarnish his overrated but excellent career. What a douchebag.
