First 9/11, Now Bernie Mac…Will This Decade Ever End?
Comedian and large, intimidating dude Bernie Mac died this morning in a Chicago-area hospital. I was never a fan, but he will always be remembered from a speech given by Herman Boone, the Virginia highschool football coach portrayed by Denzel Washington in Remember the Titans. On my first day of undergrad, Boone was speaking at some ‘Welcome to College, Motherfuckers’ event, and described one of his players from the famed Titans team:
“He was as wise as King Solomon, as compassionate as Jesus Christ, and as funny as Bernie Mac.”
As much as the press loves celebrities and their ill-conceived marriages, hilariously poor behavior and premature deaths, I’m pretty sure that no publication will be paying as high a tribute to Bernie Mac as Coach Boone, who deemed him in the company of the mythical King of Israel and the Christian savior and messiah.
